Residents of Lafia Local Government Area in Nasarawa State have expressed frustration over the prolonged abandonment of the Lafia–Agyaragu–Tofa road project, eight years after it was awarded by the state government.
When the government announced in 2017 that contracts had been approved for the construction of the six-kilometre road linking Lafia to Agyaragu and Tofa, many residents celebrated the development, expressing hope that the project would ease transportation and improve access to essential services.
However, years later, the project—valued at about ₦865 million—remains uncompleted, leaving communities to cope with a deteriorating road that has made movement difficult for commuters, traders and residents.
Residents say the poor state of the road has forced community members to take matters into their own hands. Some have been seen attempting to repair sections of the damaged road by filling potholes with bags of sand in a bid to make the route passable.
Several residents also lamented that the unfinished project has worsened transportation challenges in the area, particularly during the rainy season when parts of the road become nearly impassable.
According to them, the situation has continued to affect economic activities and daily movement within the communities connected by the road.
They further noted that the bad condition of the road often delays emergency trips to the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of residents who rely on the route for access to healthcare, markets and schools.
Community members are now calling on the Nasarawa State Government to urgently intervene and ensure the completion of the Lafia–Agyaragu–Tofa road project, stressing that the long-abandoned project has continued to place a heavy burden on residents and road users in the area.
