The Muslim Public Affairs Centre has called on the Federal Government, state authorities, and community leaders to adopt the peaceful coexistence model championed by Imam Abubakar Abdullahi as a practical framework for addressing religious and ethnic tensions in Nigeria.
MPAC made the call while reacting to renewed concerns over intolerance and communal mistrust in parts of the country. The organisation described Imam Abubakar’s approach as a proven example of leadership rooted in empathy, courage, and interfaith cooperation.
Imam Abubakar gained international recognition after sheltering Christians during violent attacks in Plateau State, an action widely praised for preventing mass casualties and promoting unity during a period of deep crisis. MPAC noted that his actions went beyond symbolism and demonstrated how moral leadership can de escalate violence even in the most volatile environments.
According to the group, government peace building strategies should move beyond reactive security responses and incorporate community driven models that promote dialogue, trust, and shared responsibility. MPAC urged religious institutions, schools, and local governments to formally integrate interfaith engagement into their peace and civic education programmes.
The organisation also called for national recognition and institutional support for individuals and groups actively promoting peaceful coexistence, stressing that such efforts strengthen national stability and social cohesion.
