A mother and her son narrowly escaped death on Monday morning after a Lexus SUV overturned multiple times at the NYSC Bus Stop along the LASU–Isheri Expressway, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority LASTMA has confirmed.
According to a statement on Wednesday by Adebayo Taofiq, the crash occurred in the early hours when the Lexus, registration number KJA 39 JT, travelling from Isheri toward Igando, abruptly lost stability and somersaulted three times before coming to rest amidst heavy peak-hour traffic.
“The occupants, a mother and her son, were successfully extricated from the severely damaged vehicle with visible bruises and mild trauma, narrowly averting what could have resulted in a fatal catastrophe,” the statement said.
LASTMA operatives quickly responded and coordinated with the Nigeria Police Force, Igando Division, which provided crowd control and secured the area during rescue and evacuation operations. Family members later conveyed the victims for further medical evaluation and care.
Reacting through Taofiq, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed relief that no lives were lost:
“We are grateful that this incident did not have a fatal outcome. We wish the mother and her son a swift recovery and reaffirm our commitment to rapid emergency response, proactive traffic management, and sustained road safety enforcement.”
Bakare-Oki also urged motorists to observe speed limits and conduct routine vehicle maintenance, particularly on critical safety components such as brakes, noting:
“Excessive speed compounded by mechanical deficiencies remains a major contributor to severe road accidents on major expressways.”
The crash comes amid growing concerns over road safety in Lagos, where multiple serious collisions have been reported recently. LASTMA and other emergency agencies frequently respond to incidents involving overturned vehicles, buses, and heavy trucks across the state.
