Former Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has cautioned Nigeria’s national team to stay focused and avoid underestimating Gabon ahead of their upcoming World Cup play-off encounter.

Nigeria secured a spot in the play-offs after a convincing 4–0 victory over Benin Republic last month, bouncing back from a slow start to the qualifying campaign. The team, led by coach Eric Chelle, will now face Gabon on Friday, while Cameroon and DR Congo contest the other fixture.

Reflecting on the nation’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, Mikel stressed that the team cannot afford a repeat of that disappointment. Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, the former Super Eagles captain urged the players to take the Gabon game seriously.

“The first match is crucial. Gabon should not be underestimated because that could put us in trouble,” he warned.
“Play as if it’s the last match of your life. Win that game first before thinking about Cameroon or anyone else.”

Mikel further reminded the players of the responsibility that comes with wearing the Nigerian jersey, noting that representing over 300 million citizens brings both pride and pressure.

“Play with confidence, courage, and passion. The green-white-green badge is a big responsibility, but I believe they can handle it,” he added.

Nigeria will meet Gabon at the Stade Prince Moulay El Hassan in Rabat on Thursday, with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 PM (WAT).
