Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is set to proceed with the planned coronation of newly elevated Ibadan high chiefs, despite indications that the affected traditional leaders may boycott the ceremony.
The event, scheduled to hold at Mapo Hall, will see the formal presentation of staff of office to prominent figures including Sharafadeen Alli, alongside Bolaji Adewoyin and Kola Babalola, following their elevation to crown-wearing Obas.
According to the state government, the ceremony is expected to attract dignitaries from across the country, including traditional rulers and government officials. However, reports suggest that the three high chiefs may not attend due to prior engagements and dissatisfaction with the short notice given for the coronation.
Sources close to the development revealed that one of the chiefs is abroad for medical treatment, another is on national assignment, while others are reportedly out of town. Observations at family compounds, including Alli’s residence in Ibadan, showed no visible preparations for the coronation.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, confirmed that the affected chiefs had informed him of their unavailability and requested a postponement. He questioned how the ceremony would proceed in their absence.
Despite this, the state government maintains that the event will go ahead as planned. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, insisted that official announcements had already been made, indicating readiness for the ceremony.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, stated that the administration has installed multiple kings and Baales since 2019, describing the exercise as part of efforts to strengthen traditional institutions.
Amid speculation of tension, aides to the Olubadan dismissed reports of a rift between the monarch and Governor Makinde, affirming that both parties remain on good terms.
