The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched an investigation into allegations that some of its officers extorted ₦100,000 from motorists along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

This development was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos by the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo. According to the statement, the agency became aware of the allegation through a Facebook post by an individual identified as Tosin, who claimed that the incident occurred on an unspecified Monday.

The post alleged that LASTMA officials apprehended commercial bus drivers operating along the coastal road and demanded a payment of ₦100,000 before releasing their vehicles. Reacting to the claim, LASTMA emphasized that it treats such allegations with utmost seriousness, stressing that the agency maintains strict professional and ethical standards.

Adebayo noted that LASTMA does not tolerate any form of misconduct, abuse of authority, or extortion by its personnel under any circumstances. He stated that a comprehensive and impartial investigation has already been initiated to determine the authenticity of the claims.

He further assured the public that any officer found guilty of wrongdoing would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the organization’s established rules and regulations. This, he said, underscores the agency’s commitment to accountability and justice.

As part of the investigative process, LASTMA has invited the complainant, Tosin, to appear at the Office of the General Manager at its headquarters in Oshodi. The individual is expected to provide credible evidence to support the allegation, as the responsibility of proof rests with the accuser.

The agency reiterated its dedication to transparency, integrity, and high standards of public service. It also urged members of the public to report any incidents of misconduct through officially recognized and verified communication channels.

LASTMA reaffirmed its resolve to build and sustain a traffic management system grounded in fairness, orderliness, and respect for the rights of all road users across Lagos State
