The Lagos State Government on Tuesday impounded a bullion van and arrested its driver for driving against traffic on the Lekki Epe Expressway at Chevron, as part of efforts to enforce traffic laws and improve road safety.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, who led the enforcement operation alongside the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the action was taken during an on site inspection of planned rehabilitation works along the busy corridor.
Giwa described driving against traffic as a dangerous offence that contributes significantly to road accidents and loss of lives across the state. He said no individual or vehicle was above the law, stressing that traffic regulations apply equally to all road users, regardless of status or purpose.
According to him, the arrested driver, identified as Daniel Ikede, chose to drive against traffic despite the road being free flowing at the time. Giwa expressed concern over what he described as growing recklessness among some motorists, including drivers of high profile vehicles who believe they are exempt from traffic rules.
He said driving the wrong way on a major expressway posed serious risks to other motorists and pedestrians and would not be tolerated by the state government.
The special adviser urged all road users to exercise patience and comply with traffic regulations, noting that road safety remains a collective responsibility.
Giwa added that the Lagos State Government would continue to intensify enforcement across major roads to deter traffic violations and reduce accidents.
The bullion van was impounded while the driver was taken into custody and is expected to be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The state government reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer roads through strict enforcement, public awareness, and continuous monitoring of traffic activities across Lagos.
