Former Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed has called for renewed investment in leadership development and a strong reading culture as essential pillars for Nigeria’s long term nation building efforts.

Speaking at a public lecture Mohammed said Nigeria’s development challenges are rooted not only in policy gaps but also in leadership capacity and intellectual engagement. He warned that a decline in reading habits weakens critical thinking and limits informed decision making.

He stressed that leaders at all levels must cultivate lifelong learning habits and encourage intellectual curiosity among young people. According to him societies that prioritise reading innovation and leadership training are better positioned to compete globally.

Mohammed also urged educational institutions media organisations and families to play active roles in promoting literacy and leadership values. He argued that nation building is a collective responsibility that requires deliberate cultural orientation.

Participants at the event agreed that fostering leadership skills and reading culture could help address issues ranging from governance to innovation and social cohesion.
