The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into alleged misconduct by officers from the Satellite Town Division in Lagos following a viral social media video.
The development was confirmed by the Force Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, who disclosed via his X handle that authorities acted swiftly after the video surfaced on April 4. The footage, posted by a user identified as Rhapstar, accused some officers of unprofessional conduct during a roadside operation.
According to Giwa, the Divisional Police Officer and officers implicated in the video have been summoned. He said statements have been taken and interviews conducted as part of the ongoing probe. Preliminary findings suggest the incident occurred in May 2025, while efforts continue to obtain accounts from victims central to the investigation.
Giwa stressed that the process is aimed at ensuring accountability rather than concealing wrongdoing. He noted that the police leadership remains committed to upholding the rule of law and professional standards across its operations.
“No officer is above accountability, and no incident is too old to investigate,” he stated, assuring the public that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
The viral video reportedly shows officers stopping a vehicle, ordering occupants to step out, and searching one individual away from the roadside-parked car. The footage has sparked widespread reactions, with many raising concerns about alleged harassment during stop-and-search operations.
Giwa also acknowledged the role of public feedback in prompting the investigation, noting that citizen engagement is essential in promoting transparency within law enforcement.
