The Akran of Badagry Kingdom, Oba Wheno Menu-Toyi, has passed away at the age of 89 after a brief illness. The revered monarch, who reigned for over 48 years, was a leading figure within the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
Reacting to the monarch’s death, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, described Oba Akran’s passing as a significant loss not only to Badagry but to Lagos and Nigeria. The governor highlighted the late king’s wisdom, dedication to cultural preservation, and advocacy for the town’s development.
“Oba Akran, as a first-class traditional ruler, left a lasting legacy that the people of Badagry Kingdom will continue to cherish,” the governor said. “He served as the custodian of traditions and promoted the kingdom’s historical sites and festivals nationally and internationally, fostering tourism and cultural exchange.”
Oba Menu-Toyi, who ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, also served as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. Governor Sanwo-Olu urged the people of Badagry and the royal family to honor his legacy, noting his contributions to unity, development, and cultural preservation.
