The Lagos State Government has sealed the Ladipo Spare Parts Market located along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road, also known as the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway, over repeated environmental infractions.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement action on Sunday in a post on X. He cited indiscriminate refuse disposal and illegal street trading as key reasons for the closure.
According to Wahab, traders in the market had persistently dumped waste on road medians and highways, creating environmental hazards and obstructing traffic flow along the busy corridor. He stated that the action aligns with the state government’s zero-tolerance policy toward environmental abuse and violations that threaten public health and safety.
“The Lagos State Government this morning sealed the Ladipo Spare Parts Market along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road over repeated environmental infractions, including indiscriminate refuse disposal on the median and highway, as well as illegal street trading,” Wahab said.
The market, situated in Mushin, is one of the largest hubs for automobile spare parts in Lagos and attracts traders and customers from across the country. However, authorities noted that it had previously been sanctioned for similar offences, indicating a pattern of non-compliance with environmental regulations.
The closure forms part of broader efforts by the state government to enforce sanitation laws, restore order along major highways and ensure that commercial activities are conducted within approved guidelines.
Officials emphasized that the market will remain sealed until traders and market authorities demonstrate full compliance with environmental standards and commit to maintaining proper waste management practices.
