The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary diversion of traffic across key routes in the state to ensure a smooth and safe hosting of the “Eko 170” Cycling Race, an event organised to mark Lagos’ 170th anniversary.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Transportation, motorists were informed that several major roads would experience partial and full closures during the race, which is expected to attract professional cyclists, fitness enthusiasts, and sports lovers from across Nigeria and beyond.
According to the government, the traffic diversion is necessary to guarantee the safety of participants and spectators, as well as to maintain order throughout the duration of the event.
The routes scheduled for diversion include sections of:
-
Ahmadu Bello Way
-
Ozumba Mbadiwe Road
-
Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge
-
Admiralty Way
-
Outer Marina
Traffic along these corridors will be redirected to alternative routes, with traffic officers, LASTMA officials, and the police deployed to manage vehicular movement and prevent congestion.
The Commissioner for Transportation said the cycling race is not just a sporting event but a symbolic celebration of Lagos’ resilience, culture, and growing reputation as a destination for international sports tourism.
He urged residents to cooperate with traffic officials and plan their movements ahead of time, noting that the inconvenience would be temporary but the long-term benefits for the state’s image and economy would be significant.
While many residents welcomed the initiative as a positive step toward promoting healthy living and tourism, others expressed concern about the impact on daily commuting, especially on a weekday.
Commercial drivers’ unions have appealed to the government to ensure that diversions are clearly marked to avoid confusion and unnecessary delays.
Emergency response teams, including paramedics and fire services, will be stationed along the race route. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has also assured the public that normal traffic flow will be restored immediately after the event concludes.
The “Eko 170” Cycling Race is one of several activities lined up to commemorate Lagos’ anniversary, with cultural exhibitions, concerts, and community events scheduled throughout the celebration period.
For now, residents are advised to stay informed through official government channels and factor in extra travel time as Lagos once again balances celebration with the realities of urban movement.
