Residents of Omugo Community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, have deserted their homes following repeated attacks by armed bandits. Once a bustling settlement, Omugo has now turned into a near ghost town, with only a few domestic animals remaining.
The most recent attack targeted the Omugo ECWA Church via Oro-Ago, where bandits abducted eight worshippers, including the pastor’s wife. Three of the abductees managed to escape, but the remaining five were held for a ransom of N1 billion. The community could only raise N1 million, which the attackers reportedly rejected.
This incident follows a string of violent attacks in the area. Last week, bandits invaded the Oro-Ago community, killing a vigilante known as Baba Ibeji and injuring his younger brother, Ajere. In the same raid, the assailants broke into a Point of Sales (PoS) shop located directly opposite the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) divisional office and fired shots at the facility, though no casualties were recorded.
Earlier attacks had also occurred along the Oro-Ago–Oke-Ayan route in Ilere district. Bandits ambushed a convoy and killed two local hunters who were on escort duty. These repeated incidents have heightened fear among residents, prompting many to flee the area for safety.
Tensions escalated again on Saturday when security alerts indicated that armed groups were regrouping for further attacks. In response, all security formations in the region were placed on high alert to prevent another violent incursion.
The ongoing attacks have left the Omugo and surrounding communities vulnerable, raising concerns about the effectiveness of local security measures. Residents and local vigilantes continue to live under constant threat, while authorities have yet to provide an official response to the latest attacks.
As communities in Ifelodun Local Government Area struggle to cope with persistent banditry, the humanitarian situation worsens, with families abandoning homes, schools, and places of worship. The pattern of violence underscores the urgent need for reinforced security and community protection in the region.
