Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has addressed the long-standing rumours surrounding his alleged fallout with Flavour.
The tension between the two artists surfaced in 2024 when Flavour made a cryptic post online accusing someone of imitating his musical style. Though he did not directly name anyone, Kcee felt the jab and responded, urging Flavour to stop trying to monopolise Igbo cultural music and reminding him that he had been active in the industry long before Flavour.
In a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee revealed that his first encounter with Flavour was years ago when talent manager Soso Soberekon brought the singer to him for a potential record deal. At the time, Kcee did not see enough potential in Flavour to sign him.
Kcee clarified that the ongoing tension is likely not linked to that rejection, but rather to ego and misunderstandings. He pointed out that some colleagues underestimate him because he does not boast about his talent.
“Even now, I don’t fully understand why he has issues with me, especially regarding that situation where he claimed someone was copying him. The reality is that when some people had written you off, hoping you wouldn’t progress, and you work hard to reach levels they didn’t expect, that’s what happened,” Kcee said.
He added, “I entered the music scene before Flavour. When Soso Soberekon brought him to me years ago, I was already successful and living a comfortable lifestyle in Lagos. I chose not to sign him because I didn’t see his potential at the time, it wasn’t personal.
“I don’t believe that’s the reason for any grudge. Many of my colleagues underrate my talent, partly because I don’t boast. I let my work speak for itself. Over time, those who doubted me have come to acknowledge my abilities and even apologised.”
Kcee’s comments offer insight into the early dynamics between the two musicians and emphasise his belief that professional growth, rather than personal conflicts, has shaped his journey.
