Political and community leaders from the Southeast have appealed to the federal government to explore a political resolution in the aftermath of Nnamdi Kanu’s life imprisonment, urging dialogue as a complement to judicial actions.

At a press briefing on Thursday, the leaders stressed that addressing the region’s challenges requires inclusive engagement and reconciliation, rather than relying solely on punitive measures.

“While the court’s decision must be respected, lasting peace in the Southeast depends on open dialogue and constructive political solutions,” one of the leaders said.

They called on government authorities to take steps to address socio-economic grievances and to involve community stakeholders in resolving tensions linked to separatist movements.

The group also urged restraint from all parties to prevent escalation and to promote stability across the region. They emphasized that the Southeast’s development and security depend on cooperation, political inclusiveness, and peaceful engagement.

Southeast leaders concluded that while legal processes are important, the government should simultaneously work towards strategies that foster reconciliation, national cohesion, and long-term peace.
