Abba Yusuf has disclosed that the Kano State government has paid N32 billion out of the N48 billion backlog of gratuity and death benefits inherited from the administration of Abdullahi Ganduje.
Speaking during the flag-off of the sixth tranche of payments, Yusuf said the latest N5 billion disbursement brings the total amount settled in three years to N32 billion. He noted that the government had earlier cleared N27 billion in five tranches before the latest release.
The governor explained that the backlog, which accumulated over time, had caused significant hardship for retirees and families of deceased workers. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to clearing the remaining N16 billion before the end of the year.
According to Yusuf, the ongoing payments are part of broader efforts to restore trust in government and improve the welfare of pensioners. He added that settling the outstanding obligations would provide relief to beneficiaries and strengthen social justice.
He also commended the Nigeria Union of Pensioners for its patience and cooperation throughout the process.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the state government, noting that the payments would ease financial difficulties faced by retirees. They also pledged continued support for the administration.
The development highlights efforts by the Kano State government to address long-standing pension liabilities and improve the welfare of retired public servants.
