Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly considering retirement from boxing following a tragic car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two close members of his team, his uncle, Adedamola Joshua, has revealed.
The 36-year-old boxer privately informed his family of the decision after the accident, which occurred last Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The crash killed his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and personal trainer, Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele. Joshua survived with minor injuries after being extracted from the wreckage.
Speaking from the family home in Sagamu, Adedamola said, “He has decided to leave boxing while the ovation is highest. Every time he fights, it is emotionally overwhelming for us. This decision gives us relief.”
Joshua has also pledged lifelong support to the families of Ghami and Ayodele. He shared photographs with the bereaved relatives on Instagram on Sunday, captioning the post “My Brothers Keeper,” referencing Genesis 4:9 and signifying his commitment to care for them.
A source within Joshua’s camp described his loyalty to his team, noting that both Ghami and Ayodele had been integral to his career and were with him during the visit to Nigeria when the tragedy occurred.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the vehicle, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, and driving without a valid licence. The case has been adjourned until January 20.
Joshua attended an emotional funeral service at the London Central Mosque, where hundreds paid respects. Residents in Sagamu expressed relief at his survival while mourning the loss of his friends, emphasizing faith and support for the family during this difficult time.
