The Medical Director of the State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri, Shehu Muhammad, has raised concern over a severe shortage of blood following the admission of victims from the recent air operations in Jilli village.
Speaking on Sunday, Muhammad said the facility is under pressure as it manages a growing number of casualties, many of whom require urgent blood transfusions to survive. He disclosed that at least 21 patients have been admitted so far, with several in critical condition.
According to him, while medical personnel are working tirelessly to stabilise the victims, the lack of sufficient blood supply is significantly hampering treatment efforts.
“We urgently need people to donate blood, as most of the victims brought in from Jilli require immediate transfusion,” he said.
The hospital has therefore appealed to residents of Maiduguri and surrounding communities to come forward as voluntary donors to help replenish its blood bank.
Health officials warned that without prompt donations, the situation could worsen, as more patients continue to require emergency care.
The call highlights the critical role of public support in responding to medical emergencies, particularly in crisis situations where demand for blood supplies rises sharply.
