The local government councils of Edu and Ifelodun in Kwara State have imposed 24-hour curfews on selected communities as part of intensified efforts to address rising insecurity, particularly banditry and kidnapping, in the state.
In separate statements issued on Wednesday, the councils announced that all human and vehicular movement would be strictly prohibited in the affected areas for the duration of the curfew. The decision, according to the councils, is aimed at supporting ongoing security clearance operations and restoring peace to the troubled communities.
In Ifelodun Local Government Area, the Chief Press Secretary to the council chairman, Hon. Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, Mr. Abdulquadri Jimba, confirmed that the curfew covers the entire Oro-ago District. He stated that the restriction took effect from 6 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
According to the statement, the curfew is part of a coordinated security strategy designed to disrupt the activities of terrorists and criminal elements while protecting lives and property in the district. Residents were warned to fully comply, as no movement would be allowed during the period. The council added that the measure would be reviewed as the security situation evolves.
Similarly, the Edu Local Government Council announced the imposition of a 24-hour curfew on the Gbugbu community, including its popular international market. The curfew commenced at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The council explained that the restriction was necessary to support security forces conducting operations in identified areas of interest.
Confirming the development, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said the curfew was already yielding positive results. He explained that the restriction would help security agencies track and apprehend criminal elements, prevent their escape, and identify informants aiding bandit activities within the communities.
The police commissioner emphasized that the curfew remains a crucial part of the broader security clearance operations currently underway in the affected areas.
