Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has named three key Super Eagles players as pivotal to Nigeria’s chances of lifting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations trophy, highlighting their star power and attacking quality.
Speaking on his podcast, Rio Presents, Ferdinand admitted a personal bias but insisted Nigeria’s squad depth makes them his standout pick for the title. The 2013 AFCON champions have been one of the tournament’s most impressive sides, combining clinical finishing with fluid attacking play.
“All of my African friends, probably 75% of them are Nigerian, and if I say anyone else they’ll kill me,” Ferdinand said. “I know it’s not decided yet, but nah, they’ve got Osimhen, though.”
He went on to highlight the attacking influence within the squad, naming Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi as players capable of making the difference. “Osimhen’s looking to go past Rashidi Yekini. You’ve got Lookman, the 2024 African Player of the Year. Like they’ve got Iwobi playing. I’d like to see Nigeria, man,” he added.
Nigeria remain among the tournament favourites after demonstrating free-scoring form and dispatching strong opponents on their way to the semi-finals. With Osimhen leading the line, Lookman’s creativity, and Iwobi’s playmaking, coach Eric Chelle’s side are well placed to claim a fourth AFCON crown.
However, they will need to overcome a tactically disciplined Morocco and contend with the intensity of a home crowd backing the hosts. Should the Super Eagles succeed, Ferdinand’s prediction could prove prophetic as Nigeria edge closer to continental glory.
