Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has accused President Bola Tinubu and the APC-led federal government of attempting to use state institutions, including the courts and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to target Nigerians who do not align with their party.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Governor Mohammed expressed strong disapproval of what he described as politically motivated actions aimed at intimidating opposition voices. He warned that such tactics would not be tolerated.
“The APC-led federal government thinks they can use the court and the EFCC to prosecute Nigerians who are not in their party. If they don’t stop, we are prepared to declare a war. I assure you, we will not keep quiet any longer,” he stated emphatically.
The governor reiterated his refusal to join the ruling party, emphasising that his decision reflects his principles and commitment to democratic ideals. He argued that political freedom and the right to make independent choices should be respected, and no individual should face criminalization for opposing the ruling party.
Mohammed stressed that his administration and political supporters will continue to speak out against perceived abuse of power, particularly when state mechanisms are allegedly used to suppress dissent. “I will not allow anybody to criminalize me because I refuse to join their party,” he declared.
Political observers note that the governor’s comments underscore growing tension between opposition leaders and the APC-led federal government, particularly regarding the independence of institutions such as the EFCC and judiciary. Critics have previously raised concerns that these bodies can be used selectively to intimidate or prosecute political opponents, creating a climate of fear and undermining public trust.
Governor Mohammed’s statements signal a firm stance on political accountability and reinforce his resolve to advocate for the rights of citizens who choose to remain outside the ruling party. He also appealed for respect for democratic processes, urging all parties to ensure that political engagement is conducted fairly and without coercion.
The Bauchi State governor’s warning comes amid an increasingly charged political atmosphere, with opposition figures across the country highlighting the need for checks and balances to prevent the misuse of state power for partisan purposes.
