Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has assured residents that the proposed Ondo Deep Seaport will be completed before the end of his administration, describing the project as a critical driver of the state’s economic transformation.

The deep seaport, which is to be located in Ilaje Local Government Area, was initially approved during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and recently had its operating licence revalidated by the Federal Government. Governor Aiyedatiwa described the project as a “game-changer” capable of unlocking massive industrial and commercial opportunities for the state.

The governor gave the assurance on Thursday while addressing journalists on activities marking Ondo State’s 50th anniversary. He stated that all necessary approvals had been secured and that the project was firmly on course for execution within his tenure.

According to Aiyedatiwa, Ondo State’s extensive coastline, waterways, and abundant natural resources place it in a strategic position to experience economic growth similar to that of Lagos State. He explained that the seaport would support industrialisation, boost agricultural exports, facilitate bitumen exploration, and encourage increased movement of people and businesses into the state.

“The deep seaport, by the grace of God, will be built during our time. We already have the approval, and I believe strongly that this project will be delivered before I leave office,” the governor said.

Aiyedatiwa added that the project would stimulate job creation, infrastructure development, hospitality growth, and population inflow, laying a strong foundation for long-term economic prosperity.

Speaking on the state’s golden jubilee celebration, the governor described the anniversary as more than a ceremonial event, noting that it provided an opportunity to reflect on the state’s journey, assess its present realities, and plan strategically for the future.

He paid tribute to the state’s founding fathers and past leaders, particularly Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, Ondo State’s first civilian governor, whom he described as a statesman of rare integrity. The governor also acknowledged the contributions of other past governors and leaders whose efforts, he said, have collectively shaped Ondo State’s political and institutional development since its creation on February 3, 1976.
