Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has expressed surprise over the reported defection of a key political figure Yusuf to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Kwankwaso said the move came as a shock to many supporters who believed Yusuf was committed to the party’s ideals and reform agenda. He described the development as disappointing but insisted it would not weaken the resolve of loyal members.
According to him, political parties should be built on principles rather than personal ambition. He urged party faithful to remain focused on grassroots mobilisation and long term goals rather than being distracted by individual departures.
The defection has stirred political discussions in Kano and beyond, with analysts interpreting it as part of broader realignments ahead of future elections. Party switching is a common feature of Nigerian politics, often driven by calculations about influence, resources and electoral prospects.
Supporters of the APC have welcomed Yusuf’s move, describing it as evidence of growing confidence in the ruling party’s leadership and policies. They argue that new entrants strengthen the party’s reach and diversity.
Within the NNPP, leaders are working to reassure members and prevent further defections. Some insiders say internal dialogue and restructuring efforts are underway to address grievances and reinforce party unity.
Political observers note that such shifts are likely to intensify as the political landscape evolves. They say voter perception will depend not just on party labels but also on how effectively leaders address economic hardship, insecurity and governance challenges.
Kwankwaso’s reaction underscores the emotional and strategic weight defections carry in Nigeria’s competitive political environment, where loyalty and influence can shift rapidly.
