Hundreds of residents are feared missing after fighters from Boko Haram launched an attack on Ngoshe community in Borno State, forcing many villagers to flee their homes. Boko Haram is a militant insurgent group that has carried out violent attacks across northeastern Nigeria for more than a decade.
Witnesses said the attackers stormed the community late at night, firing weapons and setting several structures ablaze. The assault reportedly created widespread panic as families rushed to escape into surrounding forests and nearby settlements.
Local sources said communication with many residents was lost during the chaos, raising fears that hundreds of people may have been separated from their families or displaced during the attack.
Security forces stationed in nearby areas were later deployed to the community after receiving reports of the assault. Officials confirmed that military personnel are conducting search operations to locate missing residents and restore stability.
Humanitarian workers expressed concern about the potential scale of displacement caused by the attack. Aid agencies operating in the region warned that sudden movements of large populations could worsen the humanitarian situation in already overcrowded camps for internally displaced persons.
Ngoshe, located near Nigeria’s northeastern border region, has experienced security challenges in the past due to insurgent activities. However, residents say the latest attack appears to have caused particularly widespread disruption.
Local authorities have urged displaced residents to move toward designated safe areas where humanitarian assistance and security protection can be provided.
Security analysts note that insurgent groups often target rural communities where government presence is limited. Such attacks are frequently designed to instill fear and disrupt normal economic and social activities.
As rescue and search efforts continue, officials say their priority is locating missing residents and ensuring that displaced families receive urgent humanitarian support.
