Human rights lawyer Barrister Maxwell Opara has made shocking allegations regarding the treatment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu during his arrest in Kenya, claiming that he narrowly escaped a planned execution.
According to Opara, Kanu told him that Kenyan police officers allegedly tortured him for seven days and made arrangements to lock him inside a vehicle and burn him alive. He claimed that the plan was only stopped after a junior police officer reportedly refused to participate, stating that Kanu was innocent.
The lawyer said the account was given directly by Kanu during legal consultations, describing it as one of the most disturbing cases of human rights abuse he had encountered. He added that the alleged actions violated international law and basic human rights standards.
Supporters of Kanu have renewed calls for an independent international investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest and extradition to Nigeria. They argue that the allegations further validate claims of unlawful treatment.
The Nigerian government and Kenyan authorities have not officially responded to the latest claims. Legal experts say such allegations if proven could have serious diplomatic and legal consequences.
