Concerns are mounting over the credibility of future elections as experts warn that Nigeria fragile broadband infrastructure could undermine electronic transmission of results. Stakeholders say years of inconsistent broadband planning, slow project execution, and weak maintenance culture have left large parts of the country without reliable internet connectivity, a key requirement for real time digital result transfer.
Telecom and election technology analysts argue that while policies promoting digital voting processes look good on paper, the supporting infrastructure has not kept pace. Many rural and semi urban communities still struggle with unstable networks, low bandwidth, and frequent service disruptions. In such areas, election officials may be forced to revert to manual collation, increasing the risk of delays and disputes.
Civil society groups have urged the government to treat broadband as critical national infrastructure. They say transparent partnerships with telecom operators, improved funding models, and strict performance monitoring are essential to ensure that election technology reforms do not collapse under technical failures.
