The House of Representatives has approved a bill prescribing stiffer penalties for electoral offences, including a ten year jail term or a fine of seventy five million naira for serious violations such as forgery and manipulation of election results.
The bill is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process and discouraging malpractice that has continued to undermine public confidence in elections. Lawmakers argued that weak enforcement and lenient penalties have emboldened offenders over the years.
Supporters of the bill say the new penalties will serve as a strong deterrent and help promote transparency, credibility, and accountability during elections. They also stressed the need for effective prosecution mechanisms to ensure the law is not merely symbolic.
The bill will now proceed to the Senate for concurrence before being transmitted to the President for assent.
