Nigerian activist Harrison Gwamnishu has firmly denied allegations that he diverted ransom money intended for the release of kidnap victims in Edo State.
The founder of the Safe City Foundation issued a detailed response following social media reports claiming that he mishandled funds and fled the state after being confronted.
Gwamnishu stated that no money was stolen and that he was never arrested or forced to escape from Edo State.
He maintained that the accusations were false and designed to tarnish his reputation.
He said that his life was threatened during the course of events and that he had gone to Edo State purely to assist with a humanitarian mission.
The activist explained that his involvement was voluntary and that he did not request payment for his contribution.
He said that the state governor had asked him how much he wanted for the assignment, but he declined any compensation and insisted that he only required an opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of the systems his organisation had developed.
He added that if financial gain had been his intention, he would have demanded a large amount, but he emphasised that the mission had never been about money.
Gwamnishu has urged the public to disregard the allegations and focus on the ongoing challenge of insecurity in the region.
He argued that misinformation and personal attacks only weaken efforts to support victims and work towards sustainable solutions.
Supporters of the activist have called for a thorough investigation into the source of the allegations.
They say the claims were spread in a manner that suggested a deliberate attempt to undermine his credibility.
Human rights groups have also requested an official statement from Edo State authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Edo State Government has not yet released a formal comment on the matter.
However, security analysts believe that the controversy highlights the need for clearer communication and improved oversight of volunteer-led interventions during sensitive security operations.
The Safe City Foundation has continued its advocacy work and has stated that it will not be discouraged by false allegations.
The organisation maintains that its priority remains the protection of vulnerable citizens and the strengthening of community-based security mechanisms.
