Gunmen have killed nine soldiers and one police officer, along with several civilians, in a deadly ambush at Giro Masa community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, targeted security personnel in the area, resulting in significant casualties and destruction. Reports indicate that the assailants also set ablaze two military gun trucks during the assault, underscoring the intensity of the нападение.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, confirmed the incident on Wednesday while speaking to journalists after visiting victims at the mortuary and the Accident and Emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi. The victims of the attack were transported to the facility for medical attention and identification.

Describing the incident as tragic, Governor Idris expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, particularly the security personnel who were deployed to protect residents of the state. “This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation,” he said.

The governor assured that the state government would take responsibility for the medical treatment of the injured and provide necessary support to the families of the deceased. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and strengthening security measures across Kebbi State.

In addition, Governor Idris offered prayers for the souls of those who lost their lives in the attack and extended condolences to their families. He emphasized the need for continued collaboration between security agencies and local communities to address emerging threats.

Following his hospital visit, the governor proceeded to the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment, aimed at gaining firsthand insight into the circumstances surrounding the incident and evaluating the security situation in the affected area.

The attack highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of the country, raising concerns about the safety of both civilians and security operatives. Authorities are expected to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and prevent further incidents in the region.
