Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has inaugurated the Southern District office of the Homeland Safety and Security Agency in Calabar, reinforcing efforts to deepen community-based security across the state.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Chief Emmanuel Ironbar, the governor said the move reflects his administration’s commitment to consolidating security gains at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related violence, particularly in rural communities.

He noted that the initiative is already yielding results, with improvements in safety compared to previous years. According to him, residents who once lived in fear can now experience greater peace, adding that the new structure will further curb criminal activities and strengthen local vigilance.

Ironbar also commended Director (South) of the agency, Chief Michael Nsan, and the volunteers for their dedication. He emphasised that recruitment into the outfit would remain transparent and community-driven to ensure trust and effectiveness, while urging personnel to stay alert and promptly report suspicious movements.

The commissioning was carried out simultaneously across the state’s three senatorial districts — Calabar (South), Ikom (Central), and Ogoja (North). The goal is to position the Homeland Safety and Security Agency as a frontline platform for intelligence gathering and rapid response at the grassroots level.

Nsan revealed that more than 1,300 volunteers are currently supporting operations in the Southern District in partnership with conventional security agencies. He said their efforts contributed to a noticeable drop in crime during the last festive period.

He further disclosed that specialised intelligence units have been established, with volunteers undergoing screening and training for formal engagement. To enhance mobility, the state government has also provided 14 motorcycles to aid patrol operations in hard-to-reach areas.

Nsan stressed that while national security agencies remain under pressure due to widespread threats, the Homeland initiative serves as a critical support system by promoting community intelligence, faster local response, and collaboration with traditional institutions—ultimately boosting public confidence and economic activities.
