Super Eagles striker Akor Adams expressed his frustration to the media following Nigeria’s penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final, Soccernet.ng reports.

Adams played 98 minutes at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat but was largely unable to influence the game, as Morocco’s defence kept him under tight control.

Beyond his own struggles on the field, the officiating became a focal point of controversy. Referee Daniel Laryea made several decisions that angered the Nigerian team, with key players including Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Adams openly disputing calls during the match.

The game was ultimately decided by penalties, with Morocco converting four spot-kicks to Nigeria’s two.

After the match, Adams, clearly upset, avoided discussing his performance and instead snapped at reporters in the mixed zone: “Go and interview the referee.”

Was the referee the reason for Nigeria’s defeat?

While Laryea’s performance drew criticism for a few questionable decisions, it cannot be seen as the main reason Nigeria lost. Statistical analysis shows that Morocco marginally outperformed Nigeria during regular play.

The Atlas Lions registered 16 goal attempts compared to Nigeria’s two and had five shots on target to the Super Eagles’ single effort. Morocco created the better chances, though goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali kept Nigeria in the game with some crucial saves.

In the penalty shootout, the players ultimately let themselves down. Samuel Chukwueze missed his kick, while Bruno Onyemaechi was unlucky to have his effort saved.

Looking ahead, CAF will need to improve the standard of refereeing for high-stakes matches to ensure critical decisions do not overshadow the quality of play.
