Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has achieved another major commercial milestone as her latest cinema release, Behind The Scenes, grossed ₦1.77 billion at the Nigerian box office, further strengthening her dominance in the film industry.
The achievement was announced on Monday by the film’s distributor, FilmOne Entertainment, in a post shared on X, formerly Twitter.
“Celebrating yet another incredible milestone, and we are certain this would not have been possible without your love and support. Behind The Scenes hits a massive ₦1.77 billion. Thank you to everyone,” the distributor said.
According to FilmOne, the film has generated a total of ₦1,767,305,878, emerging as the highest grossing movie of the weekend across West Africa, with box office figures still rising as of 4pm on January 5, 2025.
“Thank you, West Africa. Number one film of the weekend and counting,” FilmOne added, noting that the earnings were verified figures.
Behind The Scenes stars Scarlet Gomez in the lead role and boasts a star studded cast including Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, Kamo State, as well as reality television personalities Handi and Wanni Danbaki, among others.
The film centres on the theme of black tax, examining the emotional, social and financial pressures faced by individuals expected to support extended family members, a subject that has resonated with audiences across Nigeria and the wider West African market.
Earlier box office records showed that the film crossed the ₦1 billion mark, placing it among the highest grossing Nollywood productions of all time.
Following the milestone, FilmOne described Akindele as the only director to surpass ₦1 billion at the box office on three different occasions and the highest grossing producer in Nollywood history.
With Behind The Scenes maintaining strong momentum in cinemas, industry analysts say its success is driven by relatable storytelling, effective marketing and Akindele’s sustained popularity with mainstream audiences.
