The Rivers State House of Assembly has clarified that impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, remain ongoing and have not been suspended, contrary to claims circulating in some quarters.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George.

According to the Assembly, the impeachment process, which commenced on Thursday, January 8, 2026, is being conducted strictly in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The statement disclosed that two separate notices of allegations bordering on gross misconduct had been served on both the governor and the deputy governor through the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, adding that lawmakers were awaiting their formal responses.

The Assembly stressed that it was constitutionally empowered to act in defence of the rule of law and prevent any form of abuse of office, noting that members of the House remained duty bound to uphold legislative responsibility without fear or favour.

Reacting to reports suggesting that the impeachment move had been halted, the lawmakers accused certain individuals and media platforms of deliberately spreading false information to mislead the public and create tension between the legislature and residents of the state.

The House insisted it would not be distracted by intimidation, blackmail or threats, reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles and constitutional order.

It also expressed appreciation to Rivers residents for their prayers and support, while extending goodwill to advocates of democracy nationwide.

During plenary on Thursday, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally presented the notice of allegations, which include claims of extra budgetary spending, demolition of the Assembly complex, and alleged disregard for a Supreme Court ruling on legislative financial autonomy.
