The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has sanctioned the football federations of Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) following disciplinary incidents recorded during a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match between the two countries.
In its latest disciplinary overview covering World Cup qualifying fixtures, the global football governing body stated that both federations were found guilty of separate offences during the encounter played on November 16, 2025.
Nigeria was penalised for breaching regulations relating to order and security at matches after spectators were reported to have thrown objects onto the field during the game.
The violation falls under Article 17 and Article 17.2(b) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. As a result, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was fined 1,000 Swiss francs.
Meanwhile, the Congolese football authority received a heavier sanction after supporters were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the match.
The action contravened Article 17.2(d) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, prompting FIFA to impose a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs on the DR Congo Football Association.
According to FIFA, disciplinary rulings are determined based on the specific circumstances surrounding each case and may still be subject to appeal.
The organisation further explained that the disciplinary summary released publicly is mainly intended to keep the media informed, while the full legal decisions are communicated directly to the respective football federations involved.
