World football governing body FIFA has fined both Nigeria and DR Congo following disciplinary incidents that occurred during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff match.
The sanctions were issued after the controversial encounter between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and DR Congo national football team, which ended in a dramatic penalty shootout victory for the Congolese side.
The match, played in Morocco, concluded with DR Congo winning 4–3 on penalties, eliminating Nigeria from the African playoff stage and advancing the Congolese team closer to a World Cup spot.Â
Following the game, FIFA reviewed incidents involving supporters and disciplinary breaches during the match. As a result, the Nigeria Football Federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs, while the Congolese football authorities received a heavier sanction due to misconduct linked to their fans.Â
Despite the penalties, the sanctions are separate from another ongoing dispute involving Nigeria’s protest over the eligibility of certain Congolese players used during the playoff. Nigerian officials had previously accused DR Congo of allegedly fielding players whose nationality status may not have complied with FIFA regulations.Â
The petition, submitted by the NFF in December 2025, requested that FIFA investigate the matter and possibly review DR Congo’s qualification status if any violations were confirmed.Â
Meanwhile, DR Congo are continuing preparations for the intercontinental playoff, where they are scheduled to face the winner of the match between New Caledonia and Jamaica for a place at the 2026 World Cup. Â
