The Federal Government FG has partnered with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture IITA to boost yam production in an effort to close an estimated 50 million tonnes supply gap. The collaboration aims to enhance food security, support farmers, and increase export potential.

Officials said the initiative will focus on improved seed varieties, mechanized cultivation methods, and farmer training programs. Yam remains a staple crop in many parts of Nigeria, but production challenges including post harvest losses and limited access to quality inputs have constrained output.

Agriculture experts note that scaling up production could significantly strengthen rural economies and reduce food inflation pressures. The partnership is expected to introduce climate resilient varieties and expand access to extension services.

Government representatives described the initiative as part of a broader agricultural transformation agenda. They emphasized that improving productivity across value chains is critical to achieving food sufficiency and economic diversification.

Farmers associations have welcomed the move, urging timely distribution of inputs and transparent implementation. Analysts say sustained funding and monitoring will determine whether the ambitious production targets are achieved.

As implementation begins, stakeholders view the collaboration as a strategic step toward enhancing Nigeria position as a leading yam producer while addressing domestic supply deficits.
