The Federal Ministry of Works has issued a travel advisory to motorists following plans to replace damaged expansion joints on Kara Bridge, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, outbound Lagos.
In a statement signed by the Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Olayiwola Komolafe, the ministry said the repair work will begin on March 10, 2026, and is expected to last for about two weeks, ending on March 24, 2026.
According to the ministry, the temporary traffic diversion is necessary to enable engineers carry out maintenance work on the bridge, which serves as a major route linking Lagos with several parts of the country.
To reduce traffic congestion during the repair period, motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.
Drivers travelling from Ikorodu towards Mowe, Sagamu, and Ibadan are advised to divert through Shimawa or Mosinmi.
Similarly, motorists coming from Lagos Island are encouraged to use the Epe corridor through Ijebu Ode to connect to Sagamu, Ibadan, or Mowe.
The ministry cautioned motorists that shorter routes may not necessarily be the fastest during the repair period and urged road users to plan their journeys early.
Motorists were also advised to obey traffic management directives and drive cautiously around the designated work zones to ensure safety.
“The Federal Ministry of Works regrets any inconvenience this temporary partial closure may cause and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of the motoring public as the ministry continues its efforts to ensure the safety, durability and stability of the nation’s road infrastructure,” the statement added.
Earlier in February, the ministry announced a six-week partial closure of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to carry out urgent repairs on expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo–Punch Bridge.
The repairs became necessary after earlier rehabilitation works on the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge were suspended due to public complaints over prolonged traffic congestion.
Authorities explained that the expansion joints on the affected bridges had deteriorated significantly, posing safety risks and contributing to road accidents, hence the urgent need for repair works.
