The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged as the dominant party in the just-concluded area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), securing five out of the six available chairmanship positions.
Results released from the elections show that the ruling party recorded victories across most of the area councils, consolidating its political influence in the nation’s capital. In Bwari Area Council, APC candidate Joshua Ishaku clinched the chairmanship seat after polling 18,466 votes, defeating candidates from other political parties.
Similarly, the APC also won in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), the most prominent council in the FCT. The party’s candidate, Chris Garki, emerged victorious, further strengthening the APC’s grip on key political structures within the capital territory.
In Kuje Area Council, APC’s Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo won the chairmanship election, while Nuhu Daniel Kwali secured victory for the party in Kwali Area Council. The APC also recorded success in Abaji Area Council, where Abdullahi Umar Abubakar emerged as the winner.
The only exception to APC’s sweeping victory was in Gwagwalada Area Council, where the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed the chairmanship seat. The PDP candidate, Kasim Mohammed, defeated his rivals to give the opposition its sole win in the FCT polls.
Observers note that the election outcome reaffirms APC’s dominance in the Federal Capital Territory, with voters largely backing the ruling party across the councils. With five chairmanship seats secured, the APC is expected to maintain significant control over local governance and policy direction within the FCT.
The results also highlight the competitive nature of FCT politics, as the PDP’s victory in Gwagwalada demonstrates that opposition parties still retain pockets of support despite the APC’s overall strong showing.
