EXCLUSIVE: New petrol prices take effect as NNPC quits off-taker role

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has recently stopped its exclusive role as the off-taker for petrol from the Dangote Refinery. This change allows other major marketers to directly purchase fuel from the refinery. This transition is part of Nigeria’s full deregulation of the petroleum sector, and it means the NNPC is no longer the sole distributor of petrol from Dangote, enabling refineries to sell directly to marketers on a “willing buyer, willing seller” basis.

With this shift, fuel prices across Nigeria are expected to rise. In Lagos, petrol prices have increased to around ₦998 per liter, and in Abuja, they have reached ₦1,030 per liter.
