A Lagos-based advocacy organisation, Take It Back Movement, has announced the release of Rasheed Wasiu, who was detained following his participation in the #EndSARS Protests of 2020.

The group disclosed that Wasiu regained his freedom on Wednesday, March 4, after a court in Lagos struck out the case against him, effectively ending nearly six years of detention.

The #EndSARS protests began in October 2020 as a nationwide youth-led movement demanding an end to police brutality in Nigeria, particularly abuses linked to the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The demonstrations drew thousands of young Nigerians to the streets across several states. However, the protests were also marked by clashes with security agencies in some areas, mass arrests, and allegations of human rights violations.

In a statement on Thursday, the group’s Lagos State Coordinator, Adekunle Adeyemi Taofeek, confirmed Wasiu’s release and described it as a major milestone in the organisation’s advocacy campaign.

According to the statement, the court’s decision to strike out the case has finally restored Wasiu’s freedom after years of legal battles and detention.

“Today marks yet another milestone in our ongoing struggle for justice, as the case of Rasheed Wasiu was officially struck out, restoring his long-awaited freedom,” the statement said.

The group added that the development reinforces its belief that sustained advocacy, solidarity and commitment to justice can lead to meaningful outcomes.

It further revealed that through persistent advocacy, legal intervention and public pressure, several other individuals arrested in connection with the protest had also regained their freedom.

Those previously released include Sunday Okoro, Olumide Fatai, Oluwole Yisa, Daniel Joyibo, Adigun Sodiq, Kehinde Shola, Salaudeen Kamilu, Sodiq Usseni and Azeez Isiaka.

The organisation also commended a legal practitioner identified as Barrister Taiwo of Citizens Gavel for taking over Wasiu’s legal representation after the death of human rights lawyer Adeshina Ogunlana.

According to the group, Taiwo’s dedication, professionalism and commitment to justice played a significant role in securing Wasiu’s release.

The statement also paid tribute to the late Ogunlana, noting that his earlier efforts and legal groundwork laid the foundation for the eventual outcome of the case.

The group reiterated its commitment to supporting victims of injustice and advocating for accountability among institutions.

“We reiterate our unwavering commitment to standing with victims of injustice and holding institutions accountable. This struggle continues until justice is not only pursued but fully realised for all,” the statement added.
