The Obidient Movement has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of attempting to undermine free, fair, and credible elections, citing recent legislative developments and the party’s majority control of the National Assembly.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, the group described it as “ironic and hypocritical” that the APC deploys electronic registration and digital systems for its internal party processes while allegedly resisting similar transparency mechanisms in national elections.
“The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which controls the National Assembly, has clearly demonstrated its intent to undermine free, fair, and credible elections,” the statement read.
The movement warned that Nigeria’s democratic future could be jeopardised if electoral reforms, particularly those mandating real time electronic transmission of results, are not strengthened ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“It is both ironic and hypocritical for a party that deploys e registration and electronic processes for its internal affairs to deny Nigerians the same level of transparency in national elections,” Tanko stated.
Referencing alleged irregularities recorded during the 2023 general elections, the group insisted that such occurrences must not be repeated.
“The criminality witnessed during the 2023 elections will not be tolerated in 2027,” the statement added. “Nigerians everywhere must be prepared to rise up, resist, and reject this deliberate act of democratic sabotage, and to legitimately and decisively reclaim our country.”
The Obidient Movement called on citizens, civil society organisations, and the international community to closely monitor what it described as ongoing efforts that could lay the groundwork for future electoral interference.
“We will not stand idly by while the future of our nation is being mortgaged for the political gain of a privileged few,” the group said.
As part of its response, the movement announced plans to stage a peaceful march to the National Assembly. According to the statement, the protest is aimed at pressuring lawmakers to convene an emergency session and pass legislation mandating real time electronic transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal.
The group urged Nigerians nationwide to participate in what it described as a lawful push for electoral transparency and democratic reform.
