Frontline activist Aisha Yesufu has called on members of the National Assembly to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing lawmakers of failing to safeguard Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
Yesufu urged senators to stop shifting blame and take decisive legislative action to ensure that real-time electronic transmission of election results is enshrined in law. According to her, the Senate possesses the constitutional authority to drive the reform but has instead engaged in public rhetoric without concrete action.
In a post shared on X, Yesufu accused lawmakers of playing “bad cop, good cop” with Nigerians, insisting that none of them is blameless in what she described as ongoing efforts that undermine the will of the electorate.
“Dear Senators, stop playing bad cop, good cop with us. None of you is blameless,” she wrote. “You are either active or passive participants in disenfranchising the Nigerian people and subverting their power to choose who governs them.”
She challenged senators to move beyond press conferences, media appearances and online engagements, and instead use their positions within the Red Chamber to push through legislation mandating electronic transmission of results.
“You are supposed to be the voices of the people. Instead of press conferences, Twitter spaces and media appearances, go to the Red Chamber and fight for the soul of Nigeria,” she stated.
Citing the Senate’s swift action on the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, Yesufu argued that lawmakers have demonstrated their capacity to act decisively when they choose to do so.
“Stop telling us Akpabio is the problem. You all have the power to impeach Akpabio. Do it,” she added.
Her remarks add to the ongoing debate over electoral reforms and accountability within Nigeria’s legislature.
