Electricity distribution companies in Nigeria generated about N207 billion from a total billing of N258 billion issued to customers in December according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission is the government agency responsible for regulating the electricity sector.

The data indicates that a portion of billed electricity charges remained unpaid during the period. Revenue collection challenges have long affected the financial sustainability of the power sector.

Distribution companies often struggle with issues such as electricity theft, meter bypass and delayed payments by consumers. These challenges reduce the amount of revenue available for maintaining and upgrading infrastructure.

Industry experts say improving billing efficiency and expanding metering programs could help increase revenue collection.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission continues to encourage reforms aimed at strengthening the financial stability of the power sector.

Analysts say addressing these challenges is essential for improving electricity supply across the country.
