Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El Rufai, has accused the current federal administration of poor performance and constitutional violations, describing its handling of governance and security as worse than expected.
El Rufai said the state of the nation has deteriorated beyond what he and others envisaged during the 2022 and 2023 election campaigns, noting that the scale of decline in security and governance would have been difficult to believe at the time.
He alleged that about 100 billion dollars is deducted monthly from the Federation Account without due appropriation by the National Assembly and the various state assemblies, describing the practice as unconstitutional. El Rufai stressed that since part of the funds belongs to states, their assemblies must also approve such expenditures.
The former governor claimed the deductions and spending amount to impeachable offences and have allegedly continued for more than 15 months. He questioned the utilisation of an estimated 1.5 trillion dollars reportedly deducted within the period, demanding greater transparency and accountability.
El Rufai also linked the alleged financial mismanagement to the worsening security situation across the country. He questioned why insecurity continues to escalate despite the huge sums reportedly being spent, adding that it was troubling for government to ask communities to defend themselves.
He argued that effective governance requires strict adherence to constitutional provisions, accountability in public finance and decisive leadership on security. El Rufai concluded by stating that, in his assessment, the current administration has fallen short of expectations and must urgently address transparency, security and governance challenges to restore public confidence.
