The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, 19th March, and Friday, 20th March 2026 as public holidays in observance of Eid-il-Fitr, marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government. In his statement, he extended warm greetings and heartfelt congratulations to Muslim faithful across the country for the successful completion of Ramadan.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, urged Muslims to continue practising the virtues highlighted during the holy month. These include love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice, which are essential to fostering individual and societal well-being.
The minister also encouraged all Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for the country’s continued peace, unity, and prosperity. He highlighted the importance of celebrating responsibly while promoting acts of kindness, particularly towards the less privileged members of society.
“The Federal Government remains committed to fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians,” the statement added.
Eid-il-Fitr is one of the most significant religious celebrations in Islam, observed by Muslims worldwide to mark the conclusion of Ramadan. The festival is traditionally celebrated with prayers, feasting, charitable giving, and social gatherings with family and friends.
The declaration of the two-day public holiday allows citizens to participate fully in these activities while strengthening the bonds of community and goodwill. Government agencies, educational institutions, and businesses are expected to observe the holiday, giving employees and students the opportunity to join in the festivities.
Officials also emphasised the need for safety and public order during the celebrations, encouraging citizens to celebrate joyfully while adhering to all security guidelines and protocols.
By officially recognising these dates, the Federal Government underscores its commitment to respecting religious observances and promoting harmony among all faith communities in Nigeria.
