The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has dismissed claims by former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, that his bail was revoked due to his participation in political activities in Kebbi State, insisting that his continued detention is solely the result of his failure to meet bail conditions.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the anti graft agency described Malami’s claims as misleading and unfounded, stressing that the matter has no political undertone.
Oyewale explained that Malami was granted provisional administrative bail after a brief interrogation on November 28, 2025, subject to five clearly stated conditions which he acknowledged and signed, but has yet to fulfil.
According to the commission, Malami was expected to return for further interrogation on December 1, but later appealed for exemption through a letter dated December 4, citing ill health. The EFCC said it compassionately granted the request despite the fact that none of the bail conditions had been met.
The agency, however, noted that Malami failed to submit any medical report or credible evidence to support his claim of ill health. It added that he was subsequently invited for further interrogation on December 8, when he was detained pending compliance with the outstanding bail conditions.
Rejecting allegations of political interference, the EFCC said it has no interest in the political affiliation of suspects and does not restrict media appearances or political engagements.
The commission urged Malami to stop politicising the issue and focus on meeting the bail conditions to allow investigations to proceed unhindered.
