The Federal Government has officially declared Friday, April 3, and Monday, April 6, 2026, as public holidays in commemoration of the Easter celebration. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Easter, a significant event in the Christian calendar, marks the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, symbolizing hope, sacrifice, and renewal. In recognition of its importance, the government’s declaration allows Christians across the country to observe the occasion and participate in religious and social activities associated with the season.

In his message, the minister extended warm congratulations to Christians in Nigeria and across the diaspora, acknowledging the spiritual significance of Easter. He encouraged citizens to reflect on and embrace the core values demonstrated by Jesus Christ, including selflessness, forgiveness, patience, and love for one another. According to him, these virtues are essential for fostering unity, peace, and national cohesion, especially in a diverse society like Nigeria.

Tunji-Ojo further emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to policies and decisions aimed at promoting national development. He reiterated that the administration remains focused on driving economic growth, ensuring stability, and creating opportunities that lead to shared prosperity for all Nigerians. The Easter period, he noted, serves as a reminder of renewal and transformation—principles that align with the government’s broader vision for the country.

He also urged Nigerians to use the holiday period responsibly, encouraging peaceful celebrations and acts of kindness within communities. By embodying the spirit of Easter, citizens can contribute meaningfully to building a more harmonious and progressive nation.

The declaration of the public holidays provides an opportunity for reflection, celebration, and reconnection with family and faith, reinforcing the enduring message of hope and renewal that Easter represents.
