Member of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Affairs, Hon Fred Agbedi, has praised the opposition for their conduct during Tuesday’s House session on the electronic transmission of election results.
Speaking in an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Agbedi said the opposition “really stood for Nigeria and its people” during the heated session in the House of Representatives.
The session became rowdy as some members of the House walked out in protest against attempts to reverse the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
Reacting to the walkout, Agbedi said, “The Reps members were chanting as they staged a walkout of the House. It showed their displeasure. It couldn’t have led to that level, but I say kudos to the opposition. They made me proud. They did their best. They stood for Nigeria and Nigerians, and for the right thing to be done. However, I think that chanting got to the point when the majority party, APC, decided to make it a party affair.”
The incident also saw members chanting “APC Ole” following the adoption of Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, reflecting tensions between lawmakers over the e-transmission provisions.
Agbedi’s remarks highlighted the role of the opposition in advocating for transparency and accountability in the electoral process, even amid partisan confrontations.
