Digital War Allegations: Kwankwaso Faces Claims of Backing Online Smear Campaign

A civic organisation has levelled serious allegations against prominent politician Rabiu Kwankwaso, accusing him of being behind a coordinated campaign of online attacks targeting political rivals and critics.
The group, which identifies itself as the Citizens for Political Accountability, claims that digital campaigns have escalated in intensity and sophistication in recent weeks, contributing to what it describes as a “toxic online political environment.” In a statement issued on Wednesday, the organisation said it had gathered evidence suggesting that networks linked to Kwankwaso are orchestrating negative content and harassment aimed at opponents.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and a leading figure in national politics, has yet to respond publicly to the accusations. Supporters of the politician have dismissed the claims as politically motivated, arguing that such tactics are common in competitive political seasons and often used to distract from substantive issues.
The Citizens for Political Accountability said it plans to present its findings to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities, urging them to investigate the matter and hold accountable anyone found to be using online platforms to undermine democratic discourse.
Political analysts say that online harassment and weaponisation of social media have become growing concerns in Nigeria’s political landscape, where campaigns increasingly extend into digital spaces. They warn that unregulated online activities can deepen divisions and erode public trust in the electoral process if left unchecked.
As the 2027 general elections draw closer, debates over digital behaviour, political responsibility, and the boundaries of free speech are likely to intensify. Advocacy groups, civil society organisations, and tech stakeholders have repeatedly called for clearer regulations and stronger enforcement to address cyber misconduct in political contexts.
The controversy surrounding the latest accusations highlights broader challenges in balancing political competition with responsible conduct in Nigeria’s fast-evolving digital sphere.
