The Chief Imam of Ilorin, Shaykh Dr Muhammad Bashir Imam Solih OON, has died at the age of 75.
The passing of the respected Islamic scholar occurred in the early hours of Monday and was confirmed by the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council, Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Sulu Gambari CFR.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Dr Abdulazeez Arowona, the Emir described the death as a major loss to the Ilorin Emirate, the Muslim Ummah and humanity.
The Emir said the late cleric, who was the 12th Chief Imam of Ilorin, was widely known for his scholarship, integrity, dedication and commitment to peaceful coexistence.
He noted that Shaykh Bashir Imam played a vital role in uniting Islamic scholars and strengthening interfaith harmony across Kwara State.
“It is with complete submission to the will of Almighty Allah that we announce the passing of the Chief Imam of Ilorin,” the statement said, adding that his demise has left a significant vacuum in the religious life of the Emirate.
According to the statement, the Janazah prayer will be held at the Palace Square of the Emir of Ilorin by 4 p.m. on Monday, January 19, 2026.
The Emir prayed Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, accept his good deeds and grant him Al Jannatul Firdaus.
Also mourning the cleric, former Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, described the late Chief Imam as a towering spiritual figure whose life was devoted to knowledge, service and the promotion of moral values.
In a statement signed by his Press Officer on Local Matters, Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir, Saraki said the late scholar served the Ummah for over four decades, guiding generations with wisdom and humility.
Saraki added that Shaykh Bashir Imam’s influence extended beyond Ilorin, earning him respect across Kwara State and beyond.
